World Autism Day: EDSG advocates increase support, understanding for sufferers

Thursday, 2 April, 2026  was world autism day and Edo State Government joined the global community in celebrating it and campaigning for increased awareness for sufferers.

 

The theme for this year’s edition is; ‘WORLD AUTISM AWARENESS DAY 2026: “Promoting Inclusion, Understanding, and Support for Persons with Autism”.

 

The United Nations General Assembly designated 2 April as World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD) in 2007 to promote the full realization of human rights and fundamental freedoms for autistic individuals, ensuring their equal participation in society.

It is a day set aside to raise awareness, promote understanding, and advocate for the rights and well-being of persons living with autism.

 

Autism is a lifelong developmental condition that affects how individuals communicate, interact, and experience the world around them.

Edo State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Eugenia Abdallah 

 

In compliance, on behalf of the State Government, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Eugenia Abdallah in a statement circulated amongst journalists in Benin, called for increased awareness to promote inclusion, understanding, and support for persons with autism” in line with this year’s theme.

 

While each person with autism is unique, they all deserve equal opportunities, dignity, acceptance, and support to live fulfilling lives, She stated.

 

Hon. Abdallah, emphasizes the importance of building an inclusive society where children and adults on the autism spectrum are not stigmatized or marginalized, but embraced, supported, and empowered.

 

She calls on families, educators, caregivers, and the general public to foster patience, understanding, and compassion toward individuals with autism.

 

The Commissioner also commends the Executive Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for his unwavering commitment to the protection and welfare of vulnerable groups across the state.

 

She further applauds the Coordinator, Office of the First Lady, Edo State, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, for her consistent advocacy and impactful initiatives aimed at improving the lives of women, children, and persons with special needs, including those living with autism.

 

“As a Ministry, we remain committed to protecting the rights of children and vulnerable persons, including those living with autism.

 

“We will continue to advocate for policies, programs, and partnerships that promote early diagnosis, access to quality education, healthcare services, and social inclusion.”

Hon. Abdallah further urges stakeholders across sectors to intensify efforts in raising awareness, eliminating discrimination, and creating enabling environments where individuals with autism can thrive and contribute meaningfully to society.

 

“On this important day, the Ministry calls on all residents of Edo State to support the cause by spreading awareness and embracing diversity, recognizing that every individual, regardless of their condition, has unique abilities and valuable contributions to make.

 

“Together, we can build a more inclusive and compassionate Edo State.”
