To tackle the multi-faceted challenges of street begging, the Edo State government through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, has expressed readiness to partner Arewa community leaders and other religious and traditional institutions.

With deliberate intent to enhance public order, foster cleaner and safer communities across the State.

The Director of media in the ministry, Daisy Osunde made this known in a press release circulated amongst journalists weekend in Benin.

“This renewed commitment was underscored during a courtesy visit by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Eugenia Abdallah, to Arewa leaders and the Chief Imam of Benin City Central Mosque,” it was stated.

Mrs. Abdallah was quoted to have expressed concern over the harsh realities faced by the people on the street, while speaking during the engagement.

As she noted that many of them are exposed to neglect, exploitation, abuse and unsafe living conditions, often forcing them into begging and other harmful activities that rob them of their dignity and future.

Hence, the government’s approach goes beyond clearing the street, the Commissioner asserts; explaining that it is focused on the need for rehabilitation, protection, and empowerment, it was said.

The Commissioner further noted that these people possess enormous potential that can only be unlocked through proper care, education, and skill development.

Therefore; addressing the challenges of street begging cannot be achieved by the government alone, Abdallah was quoted to have pointed out.

While highlighting the crucial role of traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community-based organizations in guiding families and instilling positive values.

Responding, the Chairman of Arewa Community, and Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to Edo State Governor on Arewa Security Matters, Alhaji Badamasi Saleh appreciated the Commissioner for the visit.

Adding, that the initiative was welcomed and pledged their full support and cooperation with the state government to ensure its success.

Also, the Chief Imam of Benin City Central Mosque, Alhaji Abdulfatai Enabulele expressed strong backing for the government’s efforts, while describing street begging as contrary to social and religious principles.

He called for sustained collaboration between the government and religious institutions, to guide people away from the streets toward productive and meaningful lives.
