As this year’s edition of International Women Day (IWD) ends; the Edo State Government has empowered 164 vulnerable women across the State with the cash grants of ₦100,000 each to support and improve their businesses and livelihoods.
This was in furtherance of its commitment to women’s empowerment and economic development, it was said.
The women empowerment took place in Benin City, the State Capital during a one-day stakeholders’ engagement and grand finale of activities marking this year’s International Women’s Day, organized by the Edo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, in collaboration with the Office of the First Lady, and development partners.
The Director, media in the Ministry, Daisy Osunde made this known in a press release circulated amongst journalists in Benin on Thursday, 12 March, 2026.
Representing the Governor,
Sen. Monday Okpebholo at the event was the Commissioner for Special Duties, Hon. (Dr.) Kenneth Ihensekhien.

The Governor said the theme of this year’s celebration, “Rights, Justice, Action for All Women and Girls,” was a timely reminder that the progress of any society is closely tied to how well it protects the rights, dignity and opportunities of its women and girls.
He was quoted to have highlighted key initiatives of his administration which includes; a one billion naira loan facility provided for market women to strengthen and improve their businesses, household incomes, and enhance economic resilience in communities.
The Governor was said to have reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to policies which promote women’s economic empowerment and wellbeing.
Emphasizing, that empowering women is fundamental to achieving sustainable development and inclusive growth in the State.
The coordinator, Office of the Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani represented by the wife of the Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Nimata Umar Ikhilor also spoke at the event, Daisy said.
She was quoted to have described the International Women’s Day as a significant global occasion for celebrating the achievements, resilience and contributions of women and girls.
While also reflecting on the progress made, and the work which remains to be done.
The theme of this year’s celebration emphasizes the need to move beyond discussions and commitments, to concrete actions that will protect the rights of women and girls, promote justice and expand opportunities for them to thrive, Mrs. Anani said.
Earlier in her welcome address, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Eugenia Abdallah, said the event was organized not only to celebrate women but also to recognize the strength, courage, resilience and limitless potential they bring to families, communities and the State.
She noted that International Women’s Day serves as a reminder; that when women rise, societies prosper.
While she stressed, that the 2026 theme calls for stronger protection of women’s rights and collective action to advance gender equality.
The Commissioner was said to have commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for his unwavering commitment to women’s empowerment through deliberate policies and programmes, designed to create opportunities for them to grow, lead and contribute meaningfully to the development of the State.

She also appreciated the coordinator, Office of Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, for providing the platform which enabled the Ministry to organize what she described as an innovative women’s day celebration, which featured various activities.
Further, Mrs. Abdallah appreciated development partners and stakeholders, for their continued support towards protecting and empowering women and other vulnerable groups in the State, Daisy said.
As she acknowledged the support of men who champion gender equality, describing them as important allies in advancing women’s rights.
The Commissioner urged women to remain confident in their abilities, support one another and inspire the next generation of girls to believe that there are no limits to what they can achieve.
She emphasized that women’s voices matter, their dreams valid and their contributions remain invaluable to the growth and development of the State.
Also; the Former Deputy Speaker and Member representing Esan North East Constituency II, Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Mrs.) Marie Edeko emphasized the importance of increasing women’s participation in governance and decision-making processes.
Mrs. Edeko noted that inclusive leadership is essential for sustainable development.
Also speaking, the Chief of Mission, International Organization for Migration (IOM) Nigeria, Ms. Sharon Dimanche stressed the need to ensure that every woman and girl lives free from fear, violence and discrimination.
As she encouraged continued collaboration among stakeholders to advance gender equality and create safer, more inclusive communities for women and girls.


The presentation of cash to the beneficiaries and presentation of awards to some distinguished personalities was said to have highlighted the event.
Coordinator, Office of the Edo State First Lady, Mrs Edesili Okpebholo Anani; the Chief Medical Director, University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof. Idia Nibokun Ize-Iyamu; the Chief of Mission, International Organization for Migration (IOM) Nigeria, Ms. Sharon Dimanche were awardees.
Others include; the Chief Executive Officer, Ocean Wave Nigeria, Peter Dunia; Chairman, Etsako East Local Government Council, Rt. Hon. Sunny Ekpetika Ekpeson, and the Chairman, Oredo Local Government Council, Hon. Engr. Gabriel Iduseri.
