As the world marks this year’s International Women’s Day, Edo State Government has asserted; it remains at the forefront of implementing policies and programs that promote inclusion, protection, and opportunity for women and the girl child.
As the senator Monday Okpebholo led All Progressives Congress (APC) administration continued to demonstrate strong commitment to advancing the welfare, protection, and empowerment of women, children, and vulnerable groups.
Mrs. Eugenia Abdallah, the State commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development weekend, made the assertions while briefing journalists on the activities to mark this year’s edition.
Mrs. Abdallah said the International Women’s Day was a global event dedicated to recognizing the achievements, resilience, and contributions of women and girls across the world.
This year’s theme, “Rights, Justice, Action, For All Women and Girls,” as adopted by the United Nations, calls on governments, institutions, and communities to accelerate progress toward gender equality and ensure that the rights of women and girls are protected, respected, and fully realized, She disclosed.
According to her, in Edo State, under the visionary leadership governor Okpebholo, Government has continued to demonstrate strong commitment to advancing the welfare, protection, and empowerment of women, children, and vulnerable groups.
Hence, the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development remains at the forefront of implementing policies and programs that promote inclusion, protection, and opportunity.
She highlights some key achievements of the Okpebholo’s administration in the area of women’s empowerment and social development to include: Strengthening Protection Against Gender-Based Violence.
“The state government has intensified efforts to combat Gender-Based Violence (GBV) through improved coordination with law enforcement agencies, civil society partners, and community leaders.
“Establishment of Sexual Assault Referral Centre, Capacity building for government and nongovernment actors.
“Awareness campaigns, survivor support mechanisms, and policy initiatives have been strengthened to ensure that women and girls live free from violence and discrimination.”
Women’s Economic Empowerment
Abdallah said, also the government has supported several training and empowerment initiatives aimed at equipping women with vocational skills, entrepreneurship training, and access to opportunities.
“These programs particularly target vulnerable women, widows, and young women across the State.”
Support for Vulnerable Groups
In the same vein, “the administration has prioritized the welfare of vulnerable populations, including children, persons with disabilities, and elderly citizens.
“Social intervention programs have been expanded to provide support services, rehabilitation initiatives, and community-based assistance to those in need.”
Partnerships for Sustainable Development
“The Ministry continues to collaborate with development partners like ROLAC, IOM, GIZ, civil society organizations, and private sector stakeholders to deliver impactful programs that promote gender equality and social inclusion.
“These partnerships have strengthened advocacy, policy development, and service delivery in the State.
Promoting Women’s Participation and Leadership
“The government remains committed to amplifying women’s voices in decision-making processes.
“Through political appointments, policy engagement, advocacy platforms, and leadership development initiatives, more women are being encouraged and supported to take up leadership roles in governance and community development.”
On activities to mark the day; the Commissioner said her Ministry has organized a series of activities including: A health and awareness walk to promote wellness and solidarity; a trade fair and exhibition showcasing products and services of women farmers and entrepreneurs.
Also, a three-day empowerment training program for vulnerable women and a stakeholders’ conference focusing on women’s rights, justice, and action; and Recognition awards to outstanding women and men (HeforShe Advocates) who have contributed to societal development.
“These activities are designed not only to celebrate women but also to create platforms for dialogue, empowerment, and collaboration.”
Call to Action
Mrs. Abdallah called on all stakeholders, government institutions, development partners, private sector actors, and community leaders to continue working together to promote gender equality and social justice.
Noting; that “achieving a society where women and girls can thrive requires collective effort, sustained commitment, and deliberate action.
She reiterates; the”leadership of Sen. Monday Okpebholo remains firmly committed to protecting the rights of women and advancing policies that empower them socially, economically, and politically.
“Let us use this moment to reaffirm our dedication to building a more inclusive society where every woman and girl can live with dignity, opportunity, and hope.”
