On behalf of the Edo State Government, the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has joined the rest of the world to celebrate Fathers in the State; extolling the virtues that makes them stand out and special.

The message of heartfelt congratulations and appreciation to fathers and father figures across the State, was carried in a statement by the Ministry’s Commissioner, Mrs. Eugenia Abdallah, and availed journalists in Benin on Sunday, 26 June, 2026.

As Edo State joins the rest of the world to celebrate Fathers’ Day 2026, the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development xtends heartfelt congratulations and appreciation to fathers and father figures across our state.
Today, we honour the men who tirelessly nurture, provide, protect and lead their families with courage, sacrifice and love.
Fathers remain the bedrock of stable homes and strong communities, and their resilience, integrity and commitment continue to shape the social and economic progress of Edo State.

We celebrate not only their achievements but also the values they represent, their responsibility, compassion, perseverance and selfless service.
Through their daily sacrifices and quiet acts of dedication, fathers inspire hope, instil discipline and raise generations of responsible citizens.
The Ministry expresses profound gratitude to His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, Governor of Edo State, for his steadfast support and visionary leadership.
Through the SHINE Agenda, this administration continues to promote, protect and project the place of men and fathers in society by advancing family values, inclusion and opportunities for all citizens to thrive.

Origin of Fathers’ Day
According to Britannica, “Father’s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world. It originated in the United States, and credit for the Day is generally given to Sonora Smart Dodd.
Dodd’s father, a Civil War veteran, raised her and her five siblings after their mother died in childbirth.
The first Father’s Day was held on June 19, 1910, the month of the birthday of Dodd’s father. It became a U.S. national holiday in 1972, when Pres. Richard Nixon signed legislation designating the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day.
It is celebrated with cards, gifts, and family meals, among other activities.”
