The Edo State Government has reportedly rescued a newborn said to have been delivered by a mentally challenged mum.
Following reports that a mentally challenged woman had given birth to a baby boy in Ubiaja, Esan South East Local Government Area of the State, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Eugenia Abdallah quickly set in motion, mechanism for the newborn’s rescue.

The Commissioner’s quick intervention is a part of the unwavering commitment of the State Government to safeguarding the well-being of vulnerable citizens and residents, it was asserted.
This was contained in a press release circulated amongst journalists in Benin by the director of media in the Ministry, Daisy Osunde, weekend.
Speaking during her visit to the Local Government Council Secretariat, Mrs. Abdallah was quoted to have stated; that protecting the rights and welfare of women, children, the elderly, and other vulnerable groups remains a priority of the governor Monday Okpebholo led All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.
She reportedly emphasized that the government remains proactive and responsive, particularly in situations involving children who require urgent protection and care.

The Commissioner assured the newborn would be placed in a secure and nurturing environment where he will receive adequate medical attention, proper nutrition, and developmental support to ensure a healthy start to life.
She further assured that the mother who is currently roaming, will be located and taken to a rehabilitation facility, where she will be administered comprehensive treatment and care, aimed at stabilizing and facilitating her eventual reintegration into the society.

Mrs. Abdallah was said to have also commended the leadership of the local government and the management of Central Hospital, Ubiaja for their swift response in providing immediate medical care to the baby, and preventing the situation from deteriorating.
Responding, the Head of Local Government Administration, Ernest Oyakhilome Erebholo expressed his appreciation to the Commissioner for her swift and decisive intervention.
He praised her exceptional dedication and proactive leadership in protecting the rights and wellbeing of vulnerable citizens across the State, and pledged continued collaboration with the Ministry, Osunde said.
Highlighting the visit, and engagement was the formal handover of the baby to the Commissioner, who ensured the newborn was safely relocated from the hospital to a children’s home, where he would receive the necessary care and protection.
