EDSG applauds women political participation, calls for greater inclusion

The Edo State Government has commended women for their remarkable contributions to political and legislative advancement, noting that their active participation continues to shape governance, influence policy direction, and strengthen democratic institutions across the state.

 

The Coordinator, Office of Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, made the commendation during the maiden edition of “Convergence of Women in Leadership and Impact Awards” (COWLIA 0.1), organized by the League of Women Voters of Nigeria (NILOWV), Edo State Chapter.

The event themed: “From Purpose to Platform: How Women Rise, Lead and Create Impact,” celebrated the achievements and contributions of women in leadership.

 

Mrs. Anani who was represented by the wife of the Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Nimata Umar Ikhilor, emphasized the urgent need to increase women’s representation at all levels of governance, noting that women’s participation is essential for inclusive and sustainable development.

 

In her goodwill message, the State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Eugenia Abdallah highlighted the importance of women’s empowerment in nation-building.

 

She noted that women have consistently demonstrated courage and leadership in shaping families, communities, and nations.

 

Mrs. Abdallah stressed that empowering women goes beyond statements and must be translated into concrete policies, inclusive governance structures, and equal access to education, economic resources, and leadership opportunities.

 

“True progress can only be achieved when women are fully empowered, given equal opportunities, and included in decision-making processes at all levels.

 

“Political participation is not just a right but a vital pathway for women to influence policies, advocate for justice, and drive sustainable development.”

 

She further called on government institutions, civil society organizations, and community leaders to actively support initiatives that promote gender equality and leadership development for women.

“As we mark this occasion, let us reaffirm our commitment to breaking barriers, challenging stereotypes, and creating an inclusive society where women’s voices are heard and respected.

 

“Empowering women is not only a moral obligation but also a strategic necessity for growth, peace, and prosperity.”

 

The Commissioner also encouraged women to step forward boldly and take advantage of opportunities in politics and governance, emphasizing that their perspectives are essential for effective leadership.

Also speaking, founder of NILOWV, Rt. Hon. Dame Esther Uduehi who was represented by the former Edo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Yinka Omorogbe SAN described the gathering as purposeful.

Further speaking through Prof. Omorogbe SAN, who is also a member of NILOWV, Rt. Hon. Uduehi noted that the gathering reflected strong vision, coordination, and commitment to advancing women’s leadership.

 

In a keynote address on the event’s theme, the former Deputy Speaker and Member representing Esan North East II in the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Marie Edeko, shared valuable insights on women’s leadership and the pathways to making a meaningful impact in governance.

 

The event featured an engaging panel session where prominent women politicians and social advocates shared insights into the factors driving their political success, inspiring participants to pursue leadership roles and make meaningful societal impact.
