Chief David Omoru

From our Bureau Chief, Asaba

ASABA – The Founder and Chairman of The Delta People For Peaceful and Credible Elections (DPEACE), Chief David Omoru, has thrown his weight behind a consensus process for selecting candidates in Delta North ahead of 2027, arguing it offers “inherent advantages” over direct primaries.

In a statement made available to journalists on Thursday, 14 May, 2026, Omoru said the issue of power sharing in Delta State was generating public debate, particularly around “who should represent their constituents in the 11th National Assembly.

“Many of the political parties are looking at a consensus process against conducting direct primaries in selecting who should fly their party flag.

“This option I think is very good because of its inherent advantages. However, a critical consideration in arriving at a consensus candidate is justice, fair play and equity.”

Further, Omoru described Delta North as “a senatorial district of particular concern” because it hosts Asaba, the state capital “that belongs to every Deltan.”

He added that rights activists were already watching the candidate selection process closely.

According to him, available information shows; “a pattern of selection which would have been adjudged the best except that a particular Federal Constituency is being undermined.”

Omoru cited specific scenarios he said would be acceptable within the consensus model:

1. ‘Senate’: “There is nothing wrong if Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa replaces Sen. Ned Nwoko who is a first-term senator.”

2. ‘Aniocha/Oshimili’: “There is also nothing wrong if Hon. Ngozi Okolie, a first-term member, is replaced by more experienced Elumelu Ndidi.”

3. ‘Ndokwa/Ukwuani’: “Equally not wrong if ranking Hon. Ossai Nicholas Ossai replaces Hon. Ezechi Nnamdi, also a first-termer in the House of Representatives.”

He, however, raised concern over Ika Federal Constituency, saying: “For the Ika Federal Constituency where ranking Hon. Victor Nwokolo comes from, the reason for his not being considered to return is obviously known to pundits.”

Omoru said the “seamless option of settling for a consensus candidate in the APC” if finally adopted deserves emulation by stakeholders in other senatorial districts.

He argued it would be “a show of prudence, maturity, integrity and uncommon leadership laced with unparalleled understanding” if Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, Gov. Rt. Hon. Sheriff ~Oborevwori, and other party leaders in Delta North “save themselves from the Herculean and rigorous task of subjecting the people to an indirect primary which its result is far from being free, fair and credible.”
