Kingsley Abavo, Managing Editor, Benin
The new Chief Medical Director of the Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH), Oghara, Prof. Harrison Abedi, has unveiled his administration’s agenda for the growth and development of the State premier health institution, in the next three years.
The agenda termed: ‘Rescue Mission 2026–2029‘ he assured; was a deliberate design to reposition DELSUTH in its pride of place amongst other competitors in the country, and beyond.

The CMD made the unveiling, during the delivery of his maiden address to all members of staff at a town hall meeting held recently, at the hospital main auditorium.
This was made known in a press release by the health institution’s Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Iteme and exclusively availed hilltopnationale.com in Benin.
Prof. Abedi was quoted to have asserted that in seeking the office of the CMD, he came equipped with the ‘Rescue Mission 2026–2029‘ agenda to reposition DELSUTH for renewed growth and development.
The mission was disclosed to have been anchored on a six-point agenda; deliberately designed to rescue DELSUTH from the verge of total collapse, rebuild the hospital from the scratch and reposition it for meaningful and sustainable development.
Continuing, Prof. Abedi outlined his administration’s key areas of focus to include; enhancing clinical services with quality assurance through clinical governance; and achieving self-sustainability through increased internally generated revenue (IGR).
Also, pursuing full accreditation for residency training across departments, staff welfare training and career development, impeccable support services/ international collaboration and seeking restoration of financial subvention to the hospital.

Agenda broken into phases
Within the first year of his administration, Prof. Abedi proposes; there would be an in-depth reorganisation of the hospital services to meet the immediate needs and expectations of patients and clients.
While increasing the hospital’s revenue-generating capacity to promote self-sustainability and address staff welfare concerns, amongst others.
By the second year, he was said to have proposed; the hospital will expand scope and incorporate more services in a stepwise and rational manner, including; in-vitro fertilization/embryo transfer, high end diagnostics, neurosurgeries, etc, if funds permit.

“In the third year, we will be seeking international collaborations and establish valuable linkages, while consolidating on the gains of the first two years.
“However, many of these can run concurrently,” Prof. Abedi quickly added, it was stated.
Recognising the place of team work in accomplishing results, Prof. Abedi was said to have solicited the unwavering support and collaboration of all and sundry.
As he made an earnest appeal to the various trade unions in the hospital to sheathe their swords of strike action, for the next three years.
While pointing out that frequent industrial actions, undermine the hospital’s ability to provide uninterrupted and quality healthcare services to the people; and the ability to internally generate the revenue needed to keep the institution afloat.
He therefore urged all stakeholders particularly members of staff and Labour Unions, to exhibit good conduct, professionalism and commitment in the discharge of their duties, while putting the interest of DELSUTH above individual or sectoral interests.
Prof Abedi was further quoted to have recalled that upon assumption of office as the Chief Medical Director, he met DELSUTH in a very deplorable state, characterised by severe criticism of the hospital’s services, severe infrastructural decay, prolonged power outage, inadequate space, bushy premises and other challenges that had taken a toll on service delivery.
He also identified incessant industrial actions, declining staff morale and the emergence of an attitude of “To thy tent, O Israel” among staff as some of the factors militating against the hospital’s progress, it was said.
He assured; “however the situation was not beyond redemption,” hence staff must refuse to sit back, bicker or point accusing fingers at one another over the challenges confronting the hospital, it was stated.
Instead; “It is time to appeal to our hearts and minds to work wholeheartedly with a renewed sense of oneness of purpose, buckle up and embrace best practices holistically to secure clinical goals and encourage a multidisciplinary approach to patient care.“
The CMD was said to have reiterated his appeal to all staff members and the various Labour unions; to embrace dialogue, compassion, corporate responsibility and teamwork in resolving grievances.
As he placed a premium on the importance of the collective responsibility of every worker, to ensure that DELSUTH is restored to its former glory and place of pride in the comity of teaching hospitals in Nigeria.
