The Edo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, has deepened collaboration with the National Obstetric Fistula Centre (NOFIC) in Benin City.
This is to address the growing concerns of obstetric fistula, and strengthen healthcare services for vulnerable women across the State.
Daisy Osunde, the Director, media in the ministry made this known in a press release circulated amongst journalists in Benin on Wednesday, 18 February, 2026.

Osunde said the renewed partnership is aimed at expanding access to specialized treatment, preventive care, and comprehensive support for affected women, particularly those in rural communities.
During a visit to the centre, the Ministry’s Commissioner, Mrs. Eugenia Abdallah commended the management for its sustained commitment to treating obstetric fistula, and related conditions.
She observed that despite improvements in healthcare delivery, many women especially in the rural areas, continue to suffer preventable childbirth injuries.
The Commissioner emphasized, that obstetric fistula is not only a medical issue but also a life changing challenge that affects women physically, emotionally and socially.
Victims, Abdallah noted are often marginalized and isolated; underscoring the need for a holistic response that integrates medical treatment with psychosocial support and community reintegration.
Hence, the administration of Senator Monday Okpebholo remains committed to prioritizing the health, safety, and dignity of women, recognizing them as the bedrock of society.
The Government is committed to creating supportive systems that promote dignity, equal opportunity, and social inclusion ensuring that every woman, regardless of circumstance has access to the care and support she deserves, Abdallah was quoted to have further said.

As She outlined plans for statewide intervention programmes focused on raising awareness about obstetric fistula, and promoting early prevention.
According to Osunde, the Commissioner disclosed that efforts will also be expanded to include broader cancer screening initiatives, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.
This is as she stressed the importance of inclusive healthcare delivery that supports women, children, and men alike, noting that strong communities are built on healthy families.
Reaffirming her dedication to vulnerable populations, the Commissioner was said to have assured the Ministry will intensify outreach efforts, in remote communities to ensure that no woman is left behind.
Also, those affected received both medical care and emotional support.
While She pointed out that preventive strategies, public education, and improved referral systems are critical to eliminating neglected health conditions such as obstetric fistula.
Responding, the Chief Medical Director of NOFIC, Prof. Sunday Ileogben-Adeoye appreciated the Commissioner’s visit and reaffirmed the Centre’s dedication to comprehensive fistula care.
He emphasized the importance of sustained collaboration with the State Government, to expand access to treatment and outreach services.
The Medical Director asserts; that the Centre remains committed to providing free surgical interventions alongside emotional and social rehabilitation for affected women.
As he was said to have assured of NOFIC readiness to deepen partnerships that will improve the quality of life for women, across the State.

Meanwhile, on a guided tour of the Centre’s facilities, the Commissioner inspected key departments and commended the medical team for their professionalism, dedication, and impact in restoring hope and dignity to women in the State.
