Respondents across Benin metropolis notably at Ring Road, Oba Market, and Mission Road have expressed ignorance over the proper use of the new 3-in-1 waste bins recently deployed for effective waste disposal in those areas.
The Managing Director of the Edo State Waste Management Board, ESWMB, Amb. Dr. Lucky Enehita-Inegbenehi in his continued drive to ensure the cleanliness of Ring Road and other designated areas of the city, deployed the waste bins.

A total of nine waste bin sets were placed at nine locations within the area.
Each set contains three bins in one chain; a red plastic bin, a black plastic bin and a metal recycling cage.
According to environmentalists, the red bin is meant for hazardous waste, and the black bin is for organic waste while the metal cage is for bottles, cans, and other recyclable materials.
However, respondents who were spoken to randomly at different locations, said they dispose off their waste in any of the nearest bins without considering the type of waste.
Some said they felt the colours were only meant to beautify the plastic bins, while the purpose of the iron cage was unknown.
In all, the respondents called for more enlightenment on the proper use of the waste bins but commended the Waste Management Board for the provision.

Speaking on the initiative, Amb. Dr. Enehita-Inegbenehi stressed that the bins are provided for passers-by to dispose off litter and are not meant to serve as alternative refuse disposal points for households and traders.
He urged households and traders to continue to patronize their registered waste managers for proper waste disposal.

As he also warned against the use of cart pushers and the abandonment of refuse on road medians.
The Managing Director added that proper waste disposal will help reduce flooding in the state, noting that indiscriminate dumping of waste has been identified as a major cause of flooding.
