• Restates, safeguarding every child remains fundamental priority

To ensure decisions and actions taken by the management of the Igbinedion Educational Centre, Benin are transitioned into lasting impacts against bullying, the Edo State Government has done a follow up.
This becomes necessary as the Government views the situation with utmost seriousness, and deep compassion for all affected.

Honourable Commissioner, Ministry for Women Affairs and Social Development Mrs. Eugenia Abdallah made this known in a statement circulated amongst journalists in Benin on Wednesday, 25 March, 2025.
“The safety, dignity, and well-being of every child remain a fundamental priority of the Governor Monday Okpebholo’s led All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.
“Hence any occurrence that threatens these values is one the Ministry for Women Affairs and Social Development, addresses decisively,” Mrs. Abdallah asserts.
A couple of weeks ago, a disturbing video of a group of students bullying a fellow student at the Igbinedion Educational Centre, Benin, went viral on the social media space attracting varing reaction from both the public and the Government.

Upon receiving reports of the incident, the ministry promptly engaged with the management of Igbinedion Educational Centre, the Commissioner said.
“The school authorities expressed sincere regret over the unfortunate situation and have acknowledged the need for strengthened safeguards.
“They have committed to taking immediate corrective action, including a comprehensive review of existing policies and the implementation of proactive measures aimed at preventing any repeat occurrence.
“From the engagement and avowed commitment from the authorities at the Igbinedion Educational Centre in pursuit of justice for the assaulted student, and the corresponding punitive measure for the perpetrators, the ministry is abundantly satisfied in the moment.
“While this development is a step in the right direction, the ministry recognizes that safeguarding children is a shared responsibility that extends beyond any single institution.
“We have carefully reflected on the circumstances surrounding this incident and have drawn important lessons that will inform our actions going forward.
“Accordingly, the ministry has resolved to intensify its efforts by working collaboratively with line Ministries, relevant stakeholders across the city and other constituencies within the State.
“This will include closer engagement with schools, parents, educators, community leaders, and child protection advocates to strengthen awareness, improve reporting mechanisms, and promote a culture of respect, safety, and accountability among students.

“We have committed to taking proactive and sustained steps to bring to the barest minimum all cases of bullying, and other forms of violence in our schools.”
The Government recognises, that every child deserves to learn and grow in an environment free from fear, intimidation, or harm, Abdallah said.
The ministry therefore reassures the public, that it will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide the necessary support to ensure that appropriate standards are upheld across all educational institutions, in the State.
“We urge all stakeholders to remain vigilant and work together in fostering safe and nurturing spaces for our children.
“Together, we can build a system where every child is protected, valued, and empowered to thrive.”
